On December 18, 2024, a virtual meeting of the G7 Defense Policy Directors' Working Group (PDWG) was chaired by Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Dr. Celeste Wallander. The meeting included representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. The focus was on coordinating and increasing support to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
This working group emerged from the G7 Defense Ministerial meeting hosted by Italy in October. During that event, G7 Defense Ministers agreed to form a sub-Ministerial working group to support the Lebanese Armed Forces.
In the PDWG meeting, participants emphasized the crucial role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in stabilizing Lebanon and restoring security for its people. They also recognized the UN Interim Force in Lebanon's role in monitoring and verifying violations of UNSCR 1701.
Dr. Wallander remarked on "the cessation of hostilities" as an "historic and strategic opportunity to establish security and stability along the Blue Line." She further highlighted the Department of Defense's commitment to supporting Lebanon's government and armed forces in monitoring and enforcing peace efforts.
