A federal jury has found Troy Burke, a 40-year-old resident of Rantoul, Illinois, guilty of bank robbery. The verdict was delivered on December 11, 2024. Burke is scheduled for sentencing on May 2, 2025, at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois.
During the trial, which lasted two days, evidence was presented that detailed the events of June 20, 2024. On that day, Burke entered the Community Plus Federal Credit Union in Rantoul and indicated to a teller that he had a gun. He then removed a plastic partition separating him from the teller and threatened her with it. Burke made off with more than $9,000 in cash along with a GPS device hidden by the teller among the currency.
Shortly after leaving the bank, Burke was apprehended by Rantoul police just a few blocks away. At the time of his arrest, he was found carrying over $9,000 in cash and the GPS device from the credit union.
Since his arrest on June 20, 2024, Burke has been held in custody by the U.S. Marshals Service as he awaits sentencing.
The penalties for bank robbery can include up to twenty years of imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and fines reaching $250,000.
The investigation into this case was conducted by both the Rantoul Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Springfield Field Office. The government’s case at trial was represented by Timothy Sullivan and Bryan Freres.
