Tremayne Ferguson, a 24-year-old resident of West Haven, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for his involvement in firearm trafficking. U.S. District Judge Omar A. Williams handed down the sentence in Hartford, which will be followed by three years of supervised release.
According to court documents and statements made during proceedings, on July 26, 2023, Stefan Bagley Jr. was involved in two shooting incidents in Bridgeport after being shot and wounded while traveling in his vehicle. An investigation revealed that between October 2022 and October 2023, Bagley purchased over 20 handguns from licensed dealers and trafficked them to customers. He typically removed the serial numbers from these firearms to make them difficult to trace.
Text messages obtained during the investigation showed that Ferguson facilitated the transport of two firearms from Bagley to other individuals and requested Bagley purchase firearms on his behalf. At the time of the offense, Ferguson was on state probation.
Ferguson was arrested on December 18, 2023, and pleaded guilty to firearm trafficking conspiracy on September 9, 2024. He is currently out on a $75,000 bond but must report to prison by February 17.
Bagley also pleaded guilty to similar charges and is awaiting sentencing. Many of the firearms he trafficked remain unaccounted for.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery highlighted that this case is prosecuted under new criminal provisions from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act signed into law in June 2022. The act aims specifically at unlawful firearm trafficking and straw-purchasing.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), along with Bridgeport Police Department and Connecticut State Police are investigating this matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Gresham is prosecuting the case.
This case forms part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aiming to reduce gun violence through collaboration among law enforcement agencies and communities they serve.
