An Essex County man has admitted to charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger. Azmar Carter, also known as "Bizzy," 32, from East Orange, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo. The charges include distribution and possession with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin, and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon.

The investigation began in 2021 when law enforcement targeted a drug trafficking organization operating primarily in Orange, New Jersey. Carter was found distributing cocaine in May and July of that year. On August 18, 2021, a search of his residence and vehicle resulted in the seizure of an AK-47 rifle, an AR rifle, a .40 caliber pistol, associated ammunition, heroin and cocaine for distribution purposes, and approximately $7,177.

The drug-related offenses carry a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The firearm possession charge could result in up to 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for April 30, 2024.

U.S. Attorney Sellinger acknowledged the efforts of several law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; police departments from Orange, Elizabeth, East Orange; Newark Police Department; Belleville Police Department; among others.

This case is part of Operation Orange under the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), which aims to combat violent crime around Newark through collaboration between federal, state, county, and city agencies.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin represents the government while Christopher D. Adams serves as defense counsel for Carter.
