The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the completion of contaminated soil cleanup at 296 residential properties in 2024 at the Jacobsville Neighborhood Soil Contamination Superfund site located in Evansville, Indiana. This recent effort increases the total number of cleaned properties to 4,483. The final property for this year was completed on December 12, and cleanup activities are scheduled to resume in spring 2025.
Throughout the construction season of 2024, the EPA addressed soil contamination by lead and arsenic within the designated Superfund boundary. Additionally, soil testing was conducted at 338 more properties, bringing the cumulative total to 7,569 tested sites. In January 2024, a revised regional screening level for lead in residential soil was introduced by the EPA, potentially qualifying more homes for future cleanup efforts. As sampling continues next spring, further information will be provided to local residents.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to manage daily cleanup operations when work recommences in spring.
