Christopher R. Kavanaugh has announced his resignation as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, effective December 20, 2024. His departure marks the end of a tenure that began on October 7, 2021, when he was sworn in by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco following unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Deputy Attorney General Monaco praised Kavanaugh's service: “Four years ago, Chris Kavanaugh was one of the first people I brought in to join the Office of the Deputy Attorney General because of his experience within the Department and his leadership on national security issues.”

During his time in office, Kavanaugh made significant contributions to various legal proceedings and initiatives. He played a pivotal role in cases such as United States v. McKinsey & Company and United States v. Envigo. In both instances, his office secured landmark settlements and convictions.

Kavanaugh also addressed local crime issues with notable cases like The Killing of Big Stone Gap Police Officer Michael Chandler and The Bribery Trial of Sheriff Scott Jenkins. These efforts were part of broader transformations within the district under his leadership.

His colleagues have expressed their appreciation for his work. Steven M. Dettelbach from ATF noted Kavanaugh's impact: “Chris Kavanaugh has been an incredible partner for ATF and a national leader in the fight against violent crime.”

Kavanaugh reflected on his time in office: “Every day, the public servants of United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia work to make the District – and our Nation – a safer and better place for us all.”

His career at the Department of Justice spans over a decade as an Assistant U.S. Attorney before taking on leadership roles within WDVA.

Stanley M. Meador from FBI Richmond acknowledged Kavanaugh's contributions: “On behalf of FBI Richmond, I sincerely thank Chris Kavanaugh for his service as U.S. Attorney."

Jarod Forget from DEA’s Washington Division added: "U.S. Attorney Kavanaugh’s leadership and vision have been instrumental in our initiatives to safeguard the health and safety of citizens."

As he steps down, Kavanaugh leaves behind a legacy marked by transformative legal actions and strengthened law enforcement partnerships across Virginia.
