U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced the sentencing of Frederic Thompson, a 24-year-old resident of New Orleans. Thompson had previously entered a guilty plea to charges related to conspiring to steal mail and possession of stolen mail, violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 371 and 1708.

According to court documents, on January 30, 2022, Thompson was involved in a conspiracy to steal mail from the Lakeview Post Office in Orleans Parish and USPS mailboxes located on Metairie Road in Jefferson Parish. The scheme involved one conspirator driving while another used a stolen USPS key to access the mailboxes. Thompson was reportedly seated in the back of the vehicle during these thefts. Following a police pursuit, authorities recovered approximately 30 pieces of stolen mail from the group.

U.S. District Court Judge Jay C. Zainey sentenced Thompson to three years of probation and imposed a $200 mandatory special assessment fee.

The investigation was carried out by the United States Postal Inspection Service, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri led the prosecution efforts.
