From December 6 to 14, a delegation led by Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez, alongside the American Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) and in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League (MML) Foundation, visited Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The mission aimed to promote strategic global partnerships, enhance subnational diplomacy, create opportunities for foreign direct investment, expand global networks, and support cultural, educational, and workforce exchanges.
The delegation included representatives from Michigan's city, state, county and local governments and government agencies such as Oakland County, Washtenaw County, Wayne County, the Village of Cassopolis and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Business leaders from Michigan’s technology, cybersecurity, and automotive industries were also part of the group.
Through discussions with government and industry leaders in these countries, the delegation explored opportunities for collaboration. They aimed to foster international partnerships in strategic sectors and bolster Michigan's role as a leader in global innovation and economic development. Under AACC's leadership, they worked to strengthen foreign commercial advocacy that would benefit Michigan’s private sector and Arab American business communities across the United States. The initiative also sought to promote job creation by encouraging continued economic cooperation between the U.S., Arab American diaspora, and the Gulf region.
The trip presented an opportunity to forge new partnerships that could enhance Michigan’s global standing while scaling subnational diplomacy efforts. This effort built on momentum from previous collaborations between the Subnational Diplomacy Unit and Michigan over the past year. It focused on strengthening ties between local and international communities while promoting global business engagement. Furthermore, it positioned Michigan as a hub for innovation and commerce.
This visit supported a broader initiative known as the Michigan City and State Diplomacy Initiative launched in May 2024 by Under Secretary Fernandez along with MML President Helen Johnson. The initiative promotes global engagement between local leaders and private sectors to advance economic opportunities for investment and partnerships.
