Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson for the U.S., emphasized that "the United States calls on all stakeholders to refrain from violence and engage in meaningful collaboration to restore peace and foster unity." The statement also stressed accountability for human rights violations, such as the killing of protesters and party officials and excessive use of force by security forces.
The statement further declared that "Mozambicans deserve elections that are free of violence and that reflect the will of the people." It urged all involved parties to commit to serious electoral and institutional reforms to ensure Mozambique's future as a genuine multiparty democracy.
