ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

On December 20, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved a Record of Decision (ROD) for the Anniston PCB Site Operable Unit 4 in Alabama. The site is located in and around Anniston, including areas of Calhoun and Talladega counties.

The site is divided into Operable Units (OUs), with this ROD specifically addressing OU4. This unit encompasses Snow Creek and its floodplain downstream of Highway 78 to where it meets Choccolocco Creek, as well as Choccolocco Creek from upstream of Snow Creek to Logan Martin Lake on the Coosa River.

The EPA has previously signed two decision documents related to this site: an Interim ROD for OU3 in September 2011 and a final ROD for OU1/OU2 in November 2017. The current ROD provides background information on OU4, details on contamination levels, assessments of health and environmental risks, evaluations of remedial action alternatives, and selects a specific remedial action.

According to the EPA, "The response action selected in this ROD is necessary to protect public health or welfare or the environment from actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances from OU4 of the Anniston PCB Site into the environment." The document will be accessible on the site’s website later this week.
