United States District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Shane McMillan, a 51-year-old from Texas, to 25 years in federal prison. This follows a jury's decision finding McMillan guilty of assault with intent to commit murder and possession of a prohibited object by a federal inmate.

During the trial, evidence showed that McMillan, while incarcerated at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, attacked another inmate on July 9, 2023. He followed the victim into a cell, closed the door, and stabbed him approximately ten times with a shank. The attack was interrupted when another inmate heard screams and opened the cell door, allowing the victim to escape. The victim sustained multiple puncture wounds to his neck, chest, and torso but recovered after being airlifted to a hospital.

McMillan admitted his intention to kill the victim during an FBI interview. The investigation was conducted by both the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson prosecuted the case.
