A Honduran national has been indicted for reentering the United States after deportation, according to an announcement by United States Attorney Duane A. Evans. Alex Saul Hernandez-Perez, aged 33, was charged on December 5, 2024, with reentry of a removed alien in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a).
Court documents reveal that Hernandez-Perez was discovered in St. Bernard Parish around October 21, 2024. He had previously been deported to Honduras on June 13, 2019.
If found guilty, Hernandez-Perez could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Additionally, he may be subjected to three years of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that "an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt."
Evans acknowledged the efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in investigating the case. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis from the General Crimes Unit.
