U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero | U.S. Department of Justice
United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that Murat Aslansan, a 55-year-old resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for tax evasion. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Joshua D. Wolson. In addition to the prison term, Aslansan received two years of supervised release and a $10,000 fine. He was also ordered to pay $327,723 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Aslansan owned MA-SA Construction LLC, a company providing home remodeling and maintenance services from his Society Hill residence in Philadelphia. Between 2016 and 2018, he cashed business checks at a check cashing service instead of depositing them into business accounts and failed to report over $600,000 in gross receipts on his tax returns.
In subsequent years, 2019 and 2020, Aslansan continued this practice without filing tax returns for those years. His actions resulted in an attempt to evade taxes amounting to $327,723 owed to the IRS.
After pleading guilty to tax evasion charges in July this year, U.S. Attorney Romero commented on the case: “By evading his tax responsibilities of more than $300,000, Murat Aslansan cheated not just the government but all taxpayers who dutifully...pay their fair share.” She warned against the temptation of tax evasion due to its severe consequences.
Acting IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Amy MacNeely added: “Individuals like Mr. Aslansan...undermine public confidence in our tax system.” She emphasized that enforcement efforts target those willfully violating their legal duties regarding taxes.
The investigation was conducted by IRS Criminal Investigation with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Tiwana Wright.
