A Mahto, South Dakota man has been found not guilty of charges related to an alleged assault incident. Raymond Webb, 42, was acquitted of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury after a three-day federal jury trial held in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on December 4, 2024.
The charges stemmed from an alleged event that took place on September 17, 2023, in rural Mahto within the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. Webb had been indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2023.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell explained that the case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act. This federal statute requires certain serious crimes occurring in Indian country to be tried in federal court rather than state court.
The investigation into the incident was carried out by multiple agencies including the FBI, the Corson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services.
