A Mitchell, South Dakota man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for aggravated identity theft. The sentencing of Jeremy Zwetzig, 44, was announced by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell and took place on December 2, 2024.

U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence, which includes one year of supervised release following the prison term, restitution of $1,935.90, and a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Zwetzig was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2023 and pleaded guilty on August 29, 2024. His conviction is linked to an incident on January 23, 2023, when he stole mail in Mitchell that contained a check not addressed to him. He used the banking information from this check to create a fraudulent check drawn on the same account without the account holder's knowledge. Zwetzig made this fraudulent check payable to an actual person and deposited it into a bank account he opened using the name of the legitimate account holder to access and spend the funds.

The case was investigated by several agencies including the Mitchell Police Department, U.S Postal Inspection Service, and South Dakota Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann M. Hoffman prosecuted the case.

Zwetzig has been allowed to self-report to U.S. Marshals Service custody by December 30, 2024.
