United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell has announced the sentencing of a Rapid City man, Patrick Left Hand Bull, for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence was delivered by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on November 18, 2024.

Patrick Left Hand Bull, aged 51, received a sentence of 27 months in federal prison. This will be followed by five years of supervised release. Additionally, he is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The indictment against Left Hand Bull was issued by a federal grand jury in June 2024. He entered a guilty plea on August 28, 2024.

Left Hand Bull's obligation to register as a sex offender stems from his federal felony conviction for Abusive Sexual Contact in February 2014 under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. On March 11, 2024, he updated his registry address to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City but failed to maintain registration when he left this residence between April 27 and May 8, 2024.

The case falls under Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at addressing child sexual exploitation and abuse through collaboration among federal, state, and local agencies.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service with Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Knox prosecuting the case.

Following his sentencing, Left Hand Bull was placed into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
