On December 9, Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer engaged in a virtual meeting with the Deputy National Security Advisors from France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The discussions focused on the recent developments in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. Mr. Finer emphasized "the importance of working closely together across their respective capitals and with partners in the region to support the aspirations of the Syrian people and manage risks associated with the ongoing transition."
The group also addressed efforts to strengthen the ceasefire in Lebanon and to negotiate a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. Mr. Finer highlighted "the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to ensure Ukraine has the strongest hand possible heading into 2025" and mentioned strategies "to increase costs on Russia for its continued aggression."
Additionally, concerns were raised about democratic backsliding in Georgia, particularly noting issues during last month's elections and subsequent violence against protestors.
