Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken engaged in a conversation with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi to address the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC. The discussion emphasized the importance of the Luanda Process, spearheaded by Angolan President João Lourenço. Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude towards President Tshisekedi for his participation in discussions on December 15.
During the call, Secretary Blinken reiterated the United States' stance that M23 and Rwandan Defense Forces should cease hostilities and withdraw from their current positions in eastern DRC. He also encouraged President Tshisekedi to advance efforts to neutralize the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda armed group.
Furthermore, Secretary Blinken acknowledged President Tshisekedi’s cooperation with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has been involved in mediation efforts with M23.
