U.S. Border Patrol's El Paso Sector, in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, has issued a warning about the dangers of illegal border crossings during the winter holiday season. The cold weather poses significant risks to migrants attempting to cross the border illegally, including hypothermia and frostbite. The terrain in the region is challenging, with deserts, mountains, and remote wilderness areas becoming particularly dangerous during this time.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Scott Good highlighted the increased risks associated with illegal crossings in winter. "Crossing the border illegally is never safe, but the risks are even greater during the winter months," he said. He also noted that these routes are often controlled by transnational criminal organizations that exploit vulnerable individuals.

In Fiscal Year 2024, there were 176 migrant deaths in the El Paso Sector due to illegal smuggling operations. Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman pointed out that criminal organizations exploit difficult conditions to take advantage of migrants seeking safety and shelter. This can lead to situations where migrants become victims of human trafficking.

Homeland Security Investigations El Paso Special Agent Jason T. Stevens emphasized their commitment to addressing this issue through partnerships with various agencies. "Our mission is to collaboratively develop thoughtful and practical solutions prioritizing the safety of those seeking a better future along the border," he stated.

FBI El Paso Field Office Special Agent John S. Morales urged community involvement in preventing these tragedies and protecting vulnerable individuals from organized crime networks. "As a community, we must all remain proactive in preventing these tragedies," he said.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection encourages people seeking entry into the United States to use lawful methods and reach out for assistance from appropriate authorities or organizations.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities related to smuggling operations anonymously via phone or WhatsApp.
