The Department of Defense announced new security assistance for Ukraine to address its critical defense needs. This support is part of the security assistance surge directed by President Biden, aiming to place Ukraine in a strong position. The announcement includes a Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package valued at approximately $1.25 billion, providing additional capabilities such as air defense missiles, rocket system munitions, artillery, and anti-tank weapons.
Additionally, an estimated $1.22 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) package was unveiled to enhance Ukraine's air defense and other capabilities against Russian aggression. The USAI package includes munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), HAWK air defense munitions, Stinger missiles, counter-unmanned aerial systems munitions, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), and various other military equipment.
The announcement lists specific capabilities such as 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, air-to-ground munitions, high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARMs), unmanned aerial systems (UAS), Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, TOW missiles, small arms and ammunition, demolitions equipment and munitions, secure communications equipment, commercial satellite imagery services, medical equipment, clothing and individual gear along with spare parts and maintenance support.
This marks the Biden Administration's twenty-third USAI package and the seventy-third tranche of equipment provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. The United States continues collaborating with about 50 allies through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group to supply the necessary support for Ukraine's resistance against Russian forces.
