The call focused on the United States' support for Venezuela's democratic processes and its commitment to backing the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed through recent elections.
Spokesperson Matthew Miller provided details about the discussion, emphasizing Secretary Blinken's reaffirmation of U.S. support for democracy in Venezuela. "Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed at the ballot box, the peaceful restoration of democracy in Venezuela, and the release of all unjustly detained political prisoners," Miller stated.
The Secretary also highlighted solidarity with international efforts condemning actions by Nicolás Maduro that are perceived as anti-democratic. He praised both Venezuela's democratic opposition and its citizens for their dedication to maintaining democratic principles despite facing significant challenges.
