On December 20, 2024, Terrell Jermaine Perkins from New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced to five years in prison for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. The sentencing was delivered by United States District Court Judge Kristi K. DuBose.
Court documents reveal that on March 30, 2022, a Mobile County Sheriff's Office deputy stopped a black 2020 Dodge Journey Van on Interstate 10 near the McDonald Road exit for a traffic violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy noticed a strong marijuana odor emanating from inside. Perkins, who was driving the van, was instructed to exit the vehicle due to this odor.
A subsequent probable cause search of the van led law enforcement officers to discover a black fanny pack on the front passenger seat. Inside it were several small brownish rocks and twelve pills. Perkins acknowledged possessing these narcotics. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the rocks contained heroin and fentanyl weighing 40.75 grams in total. The pills were identified as containing 2.2 grams of methamphetamine.
The investigation into this case was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney George F. May prosecuted the case.
