US imposes sanctions over alleged Iranian and Russian election interference

The United States has announced sanctions targeting entities linked to Iranian and Russian interference in the 2024 U.S. general election. The sanctions focus on the Cognitive Design Production Center (CPDC), associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise along with its director, Valery Mikhaylovich Korovin, who are affiliated with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). These groups are accused of attempting to incite sociopolitical tensions and undermine U.S. election institutions.

Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson, stated that these sanctions add to previous efforts by the U.S. government aimed at countering Iran's attempts to erode confidence in democratic institutions and addressing Russia's global influence campaigns and cyber activities.

"The United States continues to closely monitor efforts by malicious actors to influence or interfere in the integrity of our elections," said Miller. "We remain committed to promoting accountability for state-sponsored actors who attempt to undermine public trust in our democratic institutions."

The Department of the Treasury implemented these actions under Executive Order 13848, which addresses U.S. election interference, alongside other authorities. More details can be found in the Treasury’s press release.
