United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy | U.S. Department of Justice
United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy has announced his resignation, effective January 17, 2025. Levy submitted his resignation to United States Attorney General Merrick Garland on August 2, 2024.
Levy became the Acting U.S. Attorney on May 19, 2023, and was later appointed by Attorney General Garland in November 2024 after being nominated twice by President Biden for the permanent role. During his tenure as U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, Levy served on subcommittees focused on White Collar Crime and Terrorism & National Security and was part of the Human Trafficking Work Group. He also represented the Northeastern U.S. on the Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee.
Reflecting on his time in office, Levy stated: “Serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts has truly been the highlight of my career.” He praised federal prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their dedication to upholding justice and civil rights.
Levy highlighted significant cases during his leadership including charges related to Sandra Birchmore's death; a $650 million resolution with McKinsey & Company over opioid marketing misconduct; prosecutions involving drone technology procurement linked to Iran; Jack Teixeira’s sentencing for leaking classified documents; and cyberstalking convictions against former eBay employees. The office achieved over $1 billion in False Claims Act recoveries in 2024 alone.
The newly established Human Trafficking and Civil Rights Unit prosecuted numerous cases leading to convictions against individuals involved in trafficking minors or using coercion tactics.
This announcement concludes Levy’s second stint with the Department of Justice where he initially served from 1997 until leaving in 2004 for Ropes & Gray LLP before returning as First Assistant U.S. Attorney from January 2022 through May 2023.
Following Levy’s departure, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary B. Murrane will step into the role of Acting U.S. Attorney.
