United States Attorney Nikolas Kerest has announced his resignation, effective January 20, 2025. Kerest was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate, serving as the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont since December 10, 2021. During his tenure, he led a team of 51 employees in enforcing federal criminal and civil laws in Vermont.

Reflecting on his time in office, Kerest stated, “Representing the United States as a member of the U.S. Attorney’s Office team for over fourteen years and as its leader for the past three years has been the highlight of my career." He expressed gratitude for his public service role and commended his colleagues at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their dedication to justice.

Under Kerest's leadership, efforts were intensified to tackle violent crime in Vermont. The office prosecuted illegal gun possessions more aggressively and collaborated with various law enforcement agencies across the state. Notable prosecutions included cases against Everett Simpson, Lawrence Jackson, Carl Martin, Dominique Troupe, Deven Moffitt, and Sean Fiore. The office also promoted safe gun storage initiatives through partnerships with local organizations.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office under Kerest focused on enforcing federal civil rights laws and educating Vermonters about these rights through programs like United Against Hate. The office engaged with high school students and faith communities to raise awareness about civil rights issues.

Efforts to combat elder financial fraud were also prioritized during Kerest's tenure. Prosecutions such as those against Nicholas Melanson and Nasir Hussain exemplified this focus. Additionally, educational events aimed at preventing elder fraud were conducted in collaboration with federal agencies.

The civil division under Kerest continued to excel nationally by defending federal interests successfully and setting standards in fighting fraud. Noteworthy achievements included settlements involving eBay under the Controlled Substances Act and recoveries from companies like NextGen.

Kerest acknowledged the vital role of partnerships with law enforcement agencies and community groups throughout Vermont in achieving successful outcomes during his term.

First Assistant United States Attorney Michael Drescher will assume the role of Acting United States Attorney following Kerest's departure after serving over 22 years as a civil and criminal AUSA.

Kerest has not yet disclosed his future professional plans.
