A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City has indicted Jawuan Donte Thomas, a 22-year-old from Texas, on charges related to an attempted robbery involving an ATM technician. The incident occurred on December 17, 2024, at a Wells Fargo Bank in Draper, Utah.

Court documents reveal that Thomas allegedly tried to rob the technician while armed with a screwdriver. On the same day, authorities were alerted to intentionally damaged ATMs in Riverton and Draper. Surveillance footage led detectives to a Jeep not matching its license plate registration. This vehicle was later found at the Draper bank where Thomas and another suspect were observed watching the technician repair an ATM. When the technician accessed the ATM safe, Thomas and his accomplice approached him wearing ski masks. Thomas was apprehended on-site while the second suspect escaped.

Thomas faces one count of bank robbery and is scheduled for an initial court appearance on January 9, 2025, at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

The announcement came from United States Attorney Trina A. Higgins for the District of Utah. The investigation is being conducted by an FBI Task Force Officer from South Jordan Police Department with support from Riverton City Police Department. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah is handling prosecution.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
