On January 8, 2025, representatives from the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) met with officials from the U.S. Department of State and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting took place in Washington to discuss ways to expand Taiwan's participation in the United Nations system and other international forums.

The discussions focused on short-term opportunities for Taiwan's increased involvement in organizations such as the World Health Assembly (WHA), global public health bodies, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Additionally, they explored avenues for Taiwan's engagement in non-UN international, regional, and multilateral organizations.

During the meeting, participants exchanged views on various global challenges including public health, aviation safety, environmental protection, and transnational crime. U.S. representatives highlighted "Taiwan’s exceptional expertise and valuable contributions" in these areas. They also reaffirmed "the U.S. commitment to Taiwan’s meaningful participation at the World Health Organization and ICAO." There was a shared recognition among all participants of "the importance of working closely with partners who share our concerns regarding attempts to exclude Taiwan from the international community."

The U.S.'s support for Taiwan's involvement aligns with its one China policy guided by several key documents: "the Taiwan Relations Act," "the three Joint Communiques," and "the Six Assurances."
