U.S. Attorney Timothy Duax | U.S. Department of Justice
Casey Tuttle, a 26-year-old resident of Spencer, Iowa, has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison. The sentencing took place on January 7, 2025, following Tuttle's guilty plea on August 29, 2024, in a Sioux City federal court. He admitted to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Tuttle's criminal history includes convictions in the Iowa District Court for burglary and drug offenses. In 2021, he was convicted of third-degree burglary and possession of methamphetamine for the third or subsequent offense. In 2018, he faced charges for second-degree burglary. These felony convictions legally barred him from owning firearms or ammunition.
The case against Tuttle stemmed from an incident on April 4, 2024. Officers from the Spencer Police Department stopped him while he was riding his bicycle without taillights or reflectors during early morning hours. Upon discovering outstanding arrest warrants against him, officers detained Tuttle. A subsequent search revealed that he was carrying a .22 caliber revolver, ammunition, marijuana, knives, one gram of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia in his backpack.
Tuttle confessed to law enforcement that he was using drugs at the time. This status further disqualified him from possessing firearms and ammunition under federal law.
