Andrew M. Luger, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota
U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger has announced his resignation as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the District of Minnesota, effective January 15, 2025. This marks the end of Luger's second term in this role, having been appointed by President Joseph R. Biden and sworn in on March 30, 2022. Previously, he served from 2014 to 2017 under President Barack Obama.
Luger expressed gratitude for his tenure, stating: “I have been honored to lead this office for the second time. In March 2022, I set us on the path to address violent crime to meet the challenge our community faced." He also acknowledged the efforts against child predators during his leadership.
During Luger's term, the U.S. Attorney’s Office focused on prosecuting crimes involving gun and gang violence, narcotics trafficking, child exploitation online, human trafficking and smuggling, financial fraud, and public corruption. Notable actions included charging over 100 gang members and bringing RICO cases against Minneapolis gangs for the first time. The office also charged individuals involved in the Feeding Our Future scandal and attempted bribery of a juror related to it.
Under Luger's direction, charges were brought against a defendant for an attempted arson at a mosque and convictions were secured in significant cases such as sex trafficking involving Tony Lazzaro. Additionally, efforts were made to combat straw purchasing of firearms linked to fatal shootings in Burnsville.
Luger's contributions earned him recognition from various law enforcement entities including an Honorary Award of Appreciation from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for his strategies targeting firearm violence.
Upon Luger's departure, Lisa D. Kirkpatrick will assume the role of Acting United States Attorney. Kirkpatrick is currently First Assistant United States Attorney with previous experience as Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney and Appellate Chief.
In closing remarks about his resignation, Luger thanked President Biden for nominating him and expressed appreciation towards Attorney General Garland: “I thank President Biden for nominating me as United States Attorney... It has been an honor to serve the American people.”
