HUD allocates nearly $137M to support senior and disabled housing

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced the allocation of nearly $137 million in grants aimed at increasing affordable housing and supportive services for seniors and disabled individuals. The funding is divided into two main initiatives: $97 million is directed towards the development or rehabilitation of affordable multifamily homes and rental assistance, while an additional $40 million will enhance the availability of service coordinators.

Adrianne Todman, HUD Agency Head, stated, “The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that our seniors have access to homes they can afford.” She emphasized the importance of addressing housing instability among seniors as a moral obligation.

Under HUD’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program, approximately $97 million will be used to support 732 Project Rental Assistance Contracts (PRAC), facilitating the construction and operation of 818 new rent-assisted homes for low-income seniors aged 62 or older. This includes funds earmarked for creating intergenerational homes for seniors raising children. Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner Julia Gordon highlighted the critical need addressed by this initiative: “As rents continue to climb... providing affordable and supportive housing for our nation’s seniors is more important than ever.”

The Service Coordinator in Multifamily Housing (SCMF) program will receive nearly $40 million to fund service coordinator professionals across 107 affordable multifamily homes. These coordinators connect residents with resources that enable them to live independently. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Multifamily Housing Programs Ethan Handelman remarked on the impact of these funds: “These funds help enhance the quality of life... enabling residents to live independently with dignity.”

Grantees from various states have been selected for both programs, with specific allocations outlined for each recipient.
