ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has declared a major disaster in Alaska due to severe storms and flooding that occurred from October 20 to October 23, 2024. This declaration allows for federal assistance to support state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the affected regions.

Federal aid will be provided on a cost-sharing basis to state, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. The funding will assist with emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged in the Bering Strait Regional Educational Attendance Area and Northwest Arctic Borough. Additionally, federal funding is available for hazard mitigation measures across the state.

Lance E. Davis from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been designated to coordinate federal recovery operations in these areas. Further designations may occur if requested by the state following additional damage assessments.
