An Albuquerque man, Dakota Briscoe, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison following a violent crime spree that began with a double murder. Briscoe was convicted of two counts of attempted carjacking, one count of carjacking, and possession and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The court heard evidence that on September 7, 2020, Briscoe used a tan handgun in a series of violent acts. This included the double homicide of two victims whose bodies were found in a burning vehicle in the South Valley. Although the firearm was not recovered by law enforcement, witness testimonies placed Briscoe with the weapon, and .45 caliber casings were found at the crime scenes.
Briscoe's crime spree began with the double homicide and continued as he attempted to evade capture through armed carjackings. He targeted vulnerable individuals during these incidents.
Briscoe evaded arrest until September 16, 2020. He was apprehended at a United States Border Patrol checkpoint while driving an unregistered white commercial-style van. During this encounter, he exhibited nervous behavior and provided agents with his brother's name due to an active warrant for failing to appear in New Mexico under his brother’s identity.
Upon release from prison, Briscoe will face four years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced this development.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies including the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, Albuquerque Police Department, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Police and U.S. Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jaymie L. Roybal and Jon Stanford prosecuted the case.
