Matthew M. Graves U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia
Vernon Parrish, a 41-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., received a 40-year prison sentence for the murder of his romantic rival. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith from the Metropolitan Police Department announced the verdict on January 16, 2025.
Parrish was found guilty by a jury on July 9, 2024, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He faced charges of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The case evidence revealed that Parrish went to Ronald Bailey's home on September 26, 2021, intending to kill him due to their involvement with the same woman. Parrish drove to Bailey’s residence on E Street Southeast in Washington D.C., shouted for Bailey outside his home, and fired multiple shots into the house before fleeing. Bailey died from the gunfire.
Parrish was arrested shortly after the incident on October 6, 2021, and has been detained since then.
In their announcement regarding the sentencing, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith praised those involved in investigating the case at the Metropolitan Police Department. They also acknowledged assistance from the FBI Washington Field Office Cellular Analysis Survey Team and recognized Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Bromwich along with former Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gregory Kimak and Alec Levy for their roles in prosecuting this case.
