Today, President Joe Biden announced the commutation of sentences for nearly 2,500 individuals convicted of non-violent drug offenses. These individuals were serving sentences that are now considered disproportionately long under current law and policy. This move marks a significant milestone as President Biden has issued more individual pardons and commutations than any previous U.S. president.
The clemency action addresses lengthy sentences stemming from outdated distinctions between crack and powder cocaine, as well as obsolete sentencing enhancements for drug-related crimes. "As Congress recognized through the Fair Sentencing Act and the First Step Act, it is time that we equalize these sentencing disparities," stated President Biden.
This decision aims to rectify historical injustices, correct sentencing imbalances, and offer those affected an opportunity to reunite with their families and communities after extended periods of incarceration. "I am proud of my record on clemency and will continue to review additional commutations and pardons," said President Biden.
