Adair County resident sentenced for felony assault in Indian Country

Cody Wayne Tye, a 34-year-old resident of Watts, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to time served followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down for one count of assault involving a spouse, intimate partner, or dating partner in Indian Country.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Watts Police Department, and the Westville Police Department. Tye pleaded guilty to the charge on March 11, 2024. The incident occurred on September 18, 2022, at an apartment in Westville, Oklahoma. According to investigators, Tye assaulted an individual by wrapping his hands around the victim's neck and pushing them against a wall. This act resulted in strangulation as well as bruising and abrasions. The crime took place in Adair County within the Cherokee Nation Reservation boundaries.

The sentencing hearing was presided over by U.S. District Judge John F. Heil III at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
