Sioux City man sentenced for gun possession and meth distribution

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison following a guilty plea to charges of illegal firearm possession and intent to distribute methamphetamine. Bob Schonrock, 54, received his sentence on January 16, 2025, in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.

Schonrock's criminal record includes convictions for aggravated battery, grand theft, and drug-related offenses. The latest charges stem from a November 2023 incident when Sioux City Police officers stopped Schonrock's vehicle for an equipment violation. Officers found drug paraphernalia inside the car and discovered methamphetamine residue and a handgun during their search.

Further investigation led officers to a garage used by Schonrock where they found methamphetamine residue and packaging materials. The total amount of methamphetamine seized weighed approximately 483 grams.

In addition to the prison term, Schonrock will serve a five-year supervised release period following his incarceration. He is currently held in United States Marshal’s custody awaiting transfer to federal prison. The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among law enforcement and community stakeholders.

Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case with investigations conducted by the Sioux City Police Department.
