In a recent farewell address, Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm expressed her gratitude to the National Labs for their contributions over the past four years. The remarks were delivered at Ames, Iowa, with participation from all 17 National Labs.
Granholm highlighted the historical and ongoing achievements of these labs, emphasizing their role in significant scientific advancements. She noted, "Your labs have played a role in some of the most important and grandest experiments of all time."
Reflecting on past discoveries, Granholm recounted how research at various labs has led to breakthroughs such as uranium purification during World War II and advancements in nuclear power technology. She also mentioned that COVID-19 vaccine technology traces back to studies conducted at Brookhaven Lab in the 1980s.
Granholm acknowledged the unpredictability of scientific research but stressed its potential impact: "Maybe you solve a different problem than the one you started on." She praised the dedication of lab directors and under secretaries like Geri Richmond and Jill Hruby for their leadership.
In closing, Granholm expressed her appreciation for the work done by scientists across the Department of Energy. She stated, "It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as the Secretary of Energy in these past four years," acknowledging both current achievements and future potential.
