William S. Thompson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia
Savion Garcia, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) McDowell, has been sentenced to one year in prison for possessing a weapon while incarcerated. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.
The sentencing stems from an incident on October 19, 2023, when a staff member at FCI McDowell conducted a random search of Garcia's cell. During the search, two handcrafted weapons were found on his person. These weapons, commonly referred to as "shanks," included a six-inch-long flat metal bar with a cloth handle and another piece of metal approximately six and three-fourth inches long with one end sharpened to a point. Garcia admitted that he possessed these items and acknowledged they were intended for use as weapons.
United States Attorney Will Thompson announced the sentencing and praised the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber delivered the sentence. This new prison term will begin after Garcia completes his current incarceration period. Upon his release from prison, he will commence the term of supervised release. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess was responsible for prosecuting the case.
