Robert J. "Bob" Troester U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma
Jim Bob Story, a 49-year-old resident of Cushing, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison. The sentence comes after his conviction for illegal possession of a firearm following a previous felony and for receiving and concealing stolen property. This announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.
The charges stem from an indictment returned by a federal Grand Jury on April 3, 2024. Story was accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm and handling stolen property. On February 21, 2024, officers from the Sac and Fox Nation Tribal Police Department were informed about a stolen vehicle located on Story's property. A search warrant led authorities to discover a rifle, ammunition, and other items reported as stolen from Cushing, including a welder and log splitter.
Story's criminal record includes multiple felony convictions such as second-degree burglary (case number CF-2003-82) and possession of controlled substances (case number CF-2002-204) in Payne County District Court. He also faced conspiracy charges related to methamphetamine distribution in Lincoln County District Court (case number CF-2004-195).
Due to Story's membership with the Sac and Fox Nation and the crimes occurring on tribal land held in trust for the nation, the case was tried in federal court.
On January 15, 2024, U.S. District Judge Jodi W. Dishman sentenced Story to serve five years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Dishman highlighted Story’s extensive criminal history and emphasized the need for deterrence against future offenses.
The investigation involved collaboration between several agencies: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Sac and Fox Nation Tribal Police Department; and the Cushing Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany Edgmon led the prosecution.
