An Iowa City resident, Christopher Kevin Carpenter, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for the receipt of child pornography. The sentence was handed down in Davenport, Iowa.
Court documents revealed that a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to the discovery of a social media account linked to Carpenter, 62, which had received files containing child sexual abuse material. Law enforcement conducted a search at Carpenter's residence in Coralville and seized ten electronic and storage devices. A forensic examination revealed that Carpenter had received images and videos dating back to 2001.
Following his prison term, Carpenter will undergo five years of supervised release as there is no parole in the federal system. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. The University of Iowa Department of Campus Safety conducted the investigation.
This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. This program coordinates efforts among federal, state, and local resources to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
