Jose Angel Gomez, 42, formerly residing in Washington D.C., has pleaded guilty to several charges related to three sexual assaults that occurred between July and October 2018. These incidents involved victims who were strangers to him. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) made the announcement.

Gomez's plea includes one count of first-degree sexual abuse while armed, one count of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of attempted first-degree sexual abuse, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. He faces a prison sentence ranging from 25 ½ to 35 years if the plea agreement is accepted by Judge Todd Edelman of the Superior Court for the District of Columbia. Sentencing is scheduled for April 4, 2025.

The case details are as follows: On July 15, 2018, a 22-year-old victim returned home around 2:40 AM when Gomez attacked her with a knife after she opened her basement door. He assaulted her but fled when she managed to escape and call for help.

On September 7, 2018, Gomez followed his second victim from Fort Totten Metro station into a wooded area where he assaulted her after threatening her with a knife.

The third incident took place on October 21, 2018. A woman waiting for an Uber was attacked by Gomez after he approached her on a deserted street corner. He dragged her into an alley and assaulted her before fleeing.

These cases were solved using DNA evidence among other methods. Gomez was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky on June 7, 2023, and has been detained since then.

The investigation was conducted by the MPD's Sexual Assault Unit and Cold Case Unit along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The prosecution team included Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marco Crocetti, Sharon Donovan, and Amy Zubrensky.

This case is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Initiative launched in February 2018 to address unsolved cases involving adult and juvenile victims through collaboration with various law enforcement agencies including the FBI and United States Marshal’s Service.
