Huntington man sentenced to nearly five years for federal gun crime

William S. Thompson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia

Alonzo Dewayne Harden, a 31-year-old resident of Huntington, West Virginia, received a sentence of four years and nine months in prison. This will be followed by three years of supervised release for his crime of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The incident leading to Harden's arrest occurred on May 17, 2024. Law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop in Huntington where Harden was a passenger. He attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers. During his flight, he discarded a loaded Glock Model 22 .40-caliber pistol with an extended magazine, which was later recovered by law enforcement.

Federal law prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Harden had previous felony convictions for malicious assault and use or presentment of a firearm during the commission of a felony, as ruled by the Cabell County Circuit Court on August 26, 2021.

United States Attorney Will Thompson announced the sentencing and praised the investigative efforts of the Huntington Police Department, the Huntington Violent Crime Drug Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Courtney L. Finney.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program focuses on fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
