During highway operations in Campo, California, Border Patrol agents seized two significant loads of methamphetamine within an hour. The first incident took place on Saturday at approximately 3:20 p.m. when agents from the Campo Border Patrol Station stopped a blue Dodge minivan traveling westbound on Interstate 8 near the Buckman Springs exit. A K-9 detection team was called to the scene, and after an open-air sniff, the dog alerted to narcotics in the vehicle. A search revealed nine foil-wrapped packages hidden in a compartment of the van.
The driver and narcotics were taken to a local Border Patrol station for processing. Tests confirmed that the packages contained methamphetamine weighing 97.97 pounds. The San Diego Sheriff’s Office took custody of both the driver and narcotics for further investigation, while U.S. Border Patrol seized the minivan.
Less than an hour later, another stop occurred involving a Honda sedan driven by a woman with her two minor children inside, also on Interstate 8 near Buckman Springs exit. Again, a K-9 detection team was requested and alerted to drugs in the vehicle. A search uncovered 80 cellophane-wrapped packages throughout the sedan.
The woman and her children were transported along with the narcotics to a local Border Patrol station for processing. Tests confirmed these packages contained methamphetamine weighing 83.64 pounds. The DEA took custody of the woman, identified as a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, along with the narcotics for further investigation; her children were released to family members.
San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel stated: “Two significant drug loads were taken off of our streets by our dedicated agents,” adding that it was fortunate "two children were also removed from a dangerous situation."
