Two sentenced for armed robbery of USPS mail carrier; third pleads guilty

Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

U.S. District Judge Charlene Honeywell has sentenced two individuals for their involvement in the armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Tampa, Florida. Jordan Murray, aged 20, received a sentence of nine years and six months in federal prison for armed robbery and brandishing a firearm during the crime. Jordan Brown, aged 21, was sentenced to two years and six months for aiding and abetting the theft of a postal key with knowledge that a firearm was used. The court also mandated restitution amounting to $1,531.99 to be paid to the victimized mail carrier.

A third individual involved in the crime, Darine Underwood, also known as "Droc," has pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery and brandishing a firearm but is yet to be sentenced.

Court documents detail that on September 5, 2023, while delivering mail at an apartment complex in Tampa, the USPS mail carrier was confronted by Murray and Underwood. Both were masked and gloved when they forcibly took the carrier's postal keys while displaying a firearm. After committing the robbery, they fled in a vehicle driven by Brown. Investigations showed that Brown had agreed to drive them for payment while Murray and Underwood planned to sell the stolen postal keys.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service alongside the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Ilyssa M. Spergel is prosecuting the case.
