Scott Bessent was sworn in as the 79th Secretary of the Treasury by Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh on January 28, 2025. Following the ceremony, he was greeted by employees at the U.S. Treasury's headquarters in Washington.
In his role as Secretary, Bessent will oversee the U.S. Treasury's mission to maintain a strong economy and foster economic growth while managing government finances. He is also tasked with strengthening national security by addressing economic threats and safeguarding the financial system.
Bessent brings 40 years of experience in global investment management, having visited numerous countries and engaged with international leaders and central bankers. Known for his expertise in currency and fixed income, he has contributed to various economic journals and business publications.
Before assuming his current position, Bessent founded Key Square Capital Management, where he served as CEO and Chief Investment Officer. He previously held the role of Chief Investment Officer at Soros Fund Management and taught economic history at Yale University.
His background includes involvement in agriculture, publishing, and hospitality sectors through his family. A South Carolina native, Bessent graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Bessent has contributed to community initiatives such as creating the McLeod Rehabilitation Center at Shriners Children's Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. He has served on various boards including Rockefeller University and supported organizations like Harlem Children's Zone.
An advocate for financial literacy and education programs, Bessent resides with his family in Washington D.C., and Charleston, South Carolina.
