A Kansas man has been sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer. The incident occurred when Diego Almaguer, 19, of Kansas City, Kansas, deliberately drove his vehicle into an officer who was attempting to arrest the passenger of Almaguer's vehicle.
Court documents reveal that Almaguer pleaded guilty to one count of forcible assault on a federal officer. The event took place on February 23, 2024, when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrived at a home in Kansas City, Kansas, to execute an arrest warrant. They observed Almaguer and the individual they were seeking enter a vehicle parked in the driveway with Almaguer at the wheel.
Law enforcement agents approached in their vehicles with emergency lights activated. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer stood in front of the car wearing a ballistic vest marked "police." According to reports, Almaguer then struck the officer with his vehicle, causing him to be thrown over the windshield and onto the ground.
Following this confrontation, Almaguer led officers on a high-speed pursuit across state lines into Missouri, reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Both he and his passenger were eventually apprehended while hiding in an outbuilding behind a residence in Kansas City, Missouri.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Faiza Alhambra.
