The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's New England Office has awarded the 2024 Regional Wastewater Treatment Awards to a Connecticut wastewater treatment plant operator. This recognition is part of the EPA's long-standing program that highlights individuals in the wastewater field for their dedication to managing and operating facilities throughout New England.
Rian Savage, Superintendent of the University of Connecticut Water Resource Recovery Facility, was honored as one of five recipients across New England. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection played a significant role in nominating Savage for this accolade.
"The EPA Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator of the Year Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance," stated an EPA spokesperson.
The award underscores the vital work performed by wastewater operators and staff, who strive to protect public health and the environment despite often facing limited resources.
