The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New England Region has acknowledged the efforts of several New Hampshire wastewater treatment facilities and individuals with the 2024 Regional Wastewater Treatment Awards. These awards aim to recognize their dedication to enhancing water quality.

For four decades, the EPA Regional Wastewater Awards Program has been celebrating those in the wastewater sector who deliver essential public services by managing and operating treatment facilities across New England.

Ernie Smalley, Superintendent of Hinsdale Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW), was honored with the 2024 EPA Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator of the Year Award. Mr. Smalley is one of only five recipients in New England recognized for his exceptional work in operating and maintaining his facility. His nomination was supported by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

This award aims to acknowledge employees at publicly owned wastewater treatment plants who excel in plant operations and maintenance, ensuring improved water quality despite often limited resources.

The Newington WWTP received the 2024 Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award under Plant Operator Ariel Wright's leadership. The facility was among three across New England to be awarded for its exemplary operation and maintenance over the past year, with a nomination facilitated by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

This award honors staff at smaller facilities who perform exceptionally well with constrained resources while protecting public health and the environment.

Gary Bartlett from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation was named the 2024 EPA Regional Wastewater Trainer of the Year. As a Program Specialist, Mr. Bartlett has provided confined space entry training to operators for many years. He is one of two individuals across New England to receive this recognition, also nominated by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

This trainer award acknowledges those who provide outstanding education to operators in an evolving field where continuous training is necessary due to changing technologies, contaminants, regulations, and industry-specific issues.
