Mexican citizen pleads guilty to illegal reentry into the United States

A Mexican national, Jesus Maldonado-Lopez, has pled guilty to the charge of reentry of a removed alien. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans on January 16, 2025. Maldonado-Lopez, aged 38, violated Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(b)(1).

Court documents reveal that Maldonado-Lopez had a prior felony conviction for transporting illegal aliens within the United States. He was discovered in the New Orleans area around July 29, 2024, after being deported to Mexico on May 29, 2008.

Maldonado-Lopez could face up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Additionally, he may receive up to three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee. Sentencing is scheduled for April 15, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations in this investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis from the General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.
