Box Elder man sentenced for receipt of child pornography

Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that Taylor Bloomgren, a 23-year-old from Box Elder, South Dakota, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for receiving child pornography. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier on January 24, 2025.

Bloomgren will also face five years of supervised release following his prison term and is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Additionally, he must forfeit two Xboxes and four cellular phones and register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

The charges against Bloomgren stemmed from activities between 2021 and 2023, during which he used his phone, computer, and Xboxes to engage with an 11-year-old girl on Discord. Their interactions included virtual sex and the exchange of explicit photographs and videos.

Bloomgren was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2024 and pleaded guilty on November 8, 2024.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project involves collaboration among federal, state, and local agencies to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.

The investigation was conducted by the Box Elder Police Department and the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Knox prosecuted the case.

Following sentencing, Bloomgren was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
